The mighty Rakaia River is one of the largest braided rivers in New Zealand. Rising in the Southern Alps on the South Island, the stunning almost neon blue colour is created by floating sediment from nearby glaciers.
In Winter of 2025 I spent some time on the South Island flying my Mavic 4 Pro drone over a number of different braided river systems. The colours in the Rakaia River were just stunning.
I flew over 2 different parts of the river, upstream and downstream on different days, a couple of weeks apart. This was my favourite capture from the flights.
Print Information
