It was Winter of 2020 and as we approached the Solstice we were blessed on the Mornington Peninsula with a series of beautiful sunrises and sunsets. When this happens I try to get out with my camera as often as possible and make the most of the unusual but spectacular conditions.
This particular afternoon I was driving from our gallery in Mornington to my office in Rosebud when I could see some interesting cloud cover and strong potential for a beautiful sunset. I looked at my watch and made a last minute decision to race home and pickup my 4 year old son Zach. Since Zach was born I have taught him to appreciate beautiful sunrises and sunsets so this was a special opportunity for us us to head out together, spend some quality time and capture the sunset.
When Zach jumped in the car I had decided that we would drive around to Philip Island and capture one of the beaches near the Nobbies. As we were driving I made a quick call to the Penguin Parade and learnt that unfortunately the road in would be closed by the time we arrived.
A quick change of plan saw us drive into Mornington and head down to the harbour
then follow the coast road until we found something worth shooting. We passed through Mount Martha then arrived at Safety Beach and I was excited to see that the entrance to Dunns Creek was looking amazing!
This area changes constantly year round depending on rainfall and tidal movements. On this visit it was looking the best i'd ever seen. There was a beautiful bend in the creek as it wound through the beach before emptying into Port Phillip Bay.
When we arrived the sky was starting to light up, reflecting beautifully on the still waters of the creek entrance. Zach and I raced down to the beach and setup my camera gear. I experimented with a few diferent compositions and settled on this one.
Just as the light was about to peak Zach told me he needed to go to the toilet, and not just for a number 1! I asked if he could wait 15 minutes but he said no, it was urgent! We packed everything up as quickly as possible, jumped back in the car and drove a few minutes to the nearest public toilet.
Thankfully it was a quick pit stop and we were able to make it back to the creek entrance just in time to setup again and nail this magic shot of the last light of the day before the sun
disappeared below the horizon!
We spent the next half hour exploring the beach together and enjoying the twilight period before heading home for dinner with the rest of the family.
