Secret Falls can be found at the base of Mount Wellington, just beyond the suburbs of Hobart, the historic capital city of Tasmania.
I have visited Secret Falls a number of times before over many years, only to be greeted by a very small trickle of water and dry foilage surrounding the falls. Finally, in October 2021, after running 2 back to back photography tours of Tasmania, I made some time to head back again and was greeted by plenty of flow on the falls with lush green foilage.
Located deep in a gorge, it's always super dark down here so you need to use very long exposures to capture enough light for a photograph. With all the water flowing around the rocks below the falls, I was able to create a strong foreground in my composition and took some initial light readings. I was going to need a 30 second shutter speed! There was only 1 problem, the wind was up which meant I was going to end up with loads of blurry tree leaves around the falls.
I decided to wait for a few hours to see if the wind would ease but the sun started to peer through the trees and ruin the beautiful overcast light that I also needed. I decided to call it off and return again the following day.
When I arrived the next morning I was pleased to discover that the wind had eased overnight.
The nice low clouds were already starting to clear though so it was a race to get my shot.
I captured the vertical shot that I had envisaged when I visited the day before. It was just in time, shortly afterwards the sun started to shine through the trees, destroying the scene yet again!
