Karijini is a place that I have wanted to visit for a number of years now with Hancock Gorge high on my listed of places to shoot. Although the gorges can be quite dangerous at times (many lives have been lost here), it really is an amazing place to explore with many similarities to the slot canyons of America.

This was my first trip down into Hancock Gorge and because I was unfamiliar with the effect that different light would have in the canyons, I decided to head down before the sun rose for the day and started my descent alone and in darkness. I climbed down the side of the steep canyon and once I hit the bottom it became apparent to me quite quickly that there had been significant rain recently with plenty of water flowing through the canyon, I was going to have to get very wet.

To make my way through the gorge I had to hop over slippery rocks, wade through chest deep water holes, climb down through treacherous narrow waterfalls and climb along thin rock ledges as best I could with 20+kg of camera gear on my back. I loved every minute of it, and was happy I made it through to this incredible waterfall in the dark without any injuries.

By the time I arrived it was twilight and soon the sun rose for the day lighting up the red rock in the gorge walls beautifully. I spent a couple of hours trying a number of different shots and this is now one of my favourite all time shots.
