I did a brief reconnaissance trip down into Weano Gorge one afternoon (without my camera) to scope out potential compositions and see the difficulty level. I had been told that there was a lot of water in the gorge so was a little hesitant to take my gear down straight away. What an amazing gorge it was! I made it through all the way to the top of these beautiful falls but during my journey had to scale down slippery waterfalls/rocks and wade & swim through ice cold water that was neck deep. It was going to be tough to get 20kg of camera gear through without a dry sack but I wasn't going to be back again for at least another year so I decided it was worth the risk.

When I came back down it took me a few repeat trips to get my tripod and camera backpack through to the top of these falls (holding them high above my head while wading/swimming). It was a slippery and dangerous process but once I made it through I had the whole gorge to myself. I spent almost an hour capturing a number of long exposures in this area and then made my way back to Handrail Pool to shoot the last light of the day. Just as I was starting to pack up, a german tourist climbed down into Handrail Pool and I told him about this beautiful waterfall. He decided to swim through and check it out but by the time I had finished packing my gear away he was already back again and we made the journey out of the gorge together.

While walking back we almost stepped on a snake, luckily it retreated under a rock instead of attacking and we continued on. Unfortunately though, during the last river/waterhole crossing I had made it through first when I turned back to see that my new German friend had dropped his mobile phone into the murky chest deep water! To his dismay it was nowhere to be seen so we kept on and made it out of Weano Gorge just as the last light of the day was disappearing. What an amazing experience it had been, I will definately be back again very soon!
