In September 2024 I conducted a week long photography tour of the remote Arctic island of Senja in Norway. Once it had concluded, I flew to Venice in Italy with a long term tour participant and now good friend from Switzerland. We spent 5 days exploring and trying to photograph the beautiful landscapes around Ortisei however relentless low lying clouds covered the mountain peaks. This resulted in very poor conditions for photography and we didn't capture anything worthwhile.
Extremely frustrated after 5 days of challenging conditions, we left Ortisei and headed to Cortina d'Ampezzo, our next base for the final 5 days of our time in Italy. The following morning we rose early around 5:30am and made a 30min drive up to Passo Giau. Finally, the low clouds had cleared! We could see all the mountain peaks and also the beginning of a stunning sunrise! We headed to a little pond that I had researched prior to our trip and by the time we arrived the sky was alive with glorious colours.
I spent some time exploring around the pond and settled on this simple but stunning composition of Ra Gusela and it's neighbouring peaks reflecting in the water. As the sunrise peaked, I captured this beautiful panorama, using a long exposure to blur the clouds and add an ethereal feel.
This was most definately worth the 6 day wait!
