In September of 2016 I completed a highly successful Cairns photography workshop with an amazing group of participants before it was time to spend a few days shooting with a close friend. We drove south to the beautiful town of Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays. It was a strenuous 9 hour drive in the end due to many roadworks on the Bruce Highway but we arrived safely just after dark.

Airlie Beach is a popular holiday location, the gateway to the magnificent Whitsunday Islands and central Great Barrier Reef.

My goal for this trip was to capture a vertical panorama of Hook and Hardy Reef from a helicopter.

I was extremely excited at the prospect of re-shooting Hardy Reef, the location of 'Reef Dreaming' – my most highly awarded photograph to date, captured some 6 years earlier!

The next day with anticipation building we organised a helicopter charter at midday and had the doors removed. We took off, ascended to 1000 feet and flew out to Hardy Reef over the Whitsunday Islands. On the way out we flew past a large Eagle, wings spread and flying gracefully; with no doors we were looking right at it - what an incredible experience!

Once we arrived at Hardy Reef we completed a number of laps of the area at different altitudes and I got to work, capturing a number of vertical and horizontal panoramas. This was my first time shooting vertical panoramas from a helicopter. As expected, the biggest challenge was avoiding the rotors in the top of the frame, I had to lean out of the chopper quite a way in the end but nailed this unique capture of such an incredible part of Australia.

2 hours later we returned to Shute Harbour Airport with huge smiles (and empty wallets!), we had shared a truly memorable experience, something we will talk about for many years to come.

If you haven't had the chance to see the reef from the sky, put it on your bucket list - I highly recommend it!
