Further Tour Testimonials

"Hi Mark,

The Cairns photography workshop was a blast! I really enjoyed it and thought that it was good value. I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop – you as a host, Matt's contribution, and the other participants. Everybody contributed to a great weekend.

I thought the workshop was good value for money. There are other workshops out there that are cheaper but they seem to have much larger groups. The small group allowed us all to corner you for some one-on-one time and to get some tuition on those points most relevant to our particular interests and level of skill.

I guess my favourite locations would be the beaches north of Cairns and Mossman Gorge. I'd love the time to prowl around Mossman Gorge and look for some of those spots that are a little bit off the well-worn track. The other highlight, for me, was having some of my photos (both from the tour and earlier shots) critiqued by an independent expert.

The accommodation was very good. The meals were great – good variety, good quality, more than enough even for a big eater like me.

The technical sessions were very good – well structured, delivered in easy to understand terms and relevant to the group and the subject. They covered subjects that I wasn't expecting – things like the weather and how to make that work for you (but very relevant to the subject). I enjoyed the personal tuition – your suggestions worked very well and helped me to see ways to make the composition "rules" work for me. From what I saw of other people in the group, I think they all got plenty of benefit from the tuition.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and really believe that I got good value from it.  I’m looking forward to another tour. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge of landscape photography and the Cairns region with us."

- Mike Collier, QLD

"Hi Mark, sorry for my slow reply, I very much enjoyed our Cairns photography workshop and thank you for your wonderful skills in co-ordinating a group of us with such patience. Your relaxed, kind and calm approach creates an atmosphere where it feels ok to ask those blindingly obvious (to you) questions and have them answered in a practical, clear and unhurried manner.

Your technical sessions were helpful, relevant, interesting and concise as was your one on one advice. I felt enriched for the experience and certainly feel more comfortable and confident with the camera. Oh but there is much to learn!

I will enjoy having a play with what i have learned and then coming back to see you for the next step along the path. Great too, to see the fabulous shots you took at the end of the workshop!

Both you and Matt made the whole workshop experience an informative pleasure and i thank you for that and look forward to joining you again sometime. All the best and many thanks again."

"Hi guys, I had an awesome time on the workshop – as a full time working mother in a reasonably demanding job time to yourself is rare; let along doing something for yourself, for three days without interruption in sunny Cairns and having something tangible to show at the end was worth its weight in gold to me. As this was my first experience and I am somewhat of a novice with my camera it was with some trepidation that I signed up, (I have to say I enquired about the course via email on a Friday and Mark came back to me the next day Saturday morning asking if I needed any further information – I was impressed by that to begin with and when he was able to talk me through his style and how he liked to teach I signed up and ignored the previous recommendation I had been given). I was also a tad nervous that I would not be able to keep up with everyone else's knowledge – however that does not even come in to it and you can learn from others as well either through their experience or the questions they ask.

As this is the only course I have done I am not sure how it compares to others but for me, I think it was good value for money.

Mossman Gorge and Green Island were my favourite locations, although I love my shots taken at sunrise at Palm Cove and also sunset at the Cairns lagoon.

The workshop highlight for me was having the group agree that my Palm Cove picture taken at sunrise was 'photo of the workshop' which was pretty good as the other picture I put up for critiquing took a bit of a battering so I managed to come out of it feeling like I learned something and did something well.

Technical sessions were good for me as I am such a beginner so the hints were very helpful, the workbook provided has already been helpful as I have used a couple of the sites to get further tutorials on a couple of the things we looked at. I went out and bought a Mac pro yesterday, photo shop, external hard drive and ordered ND filters, so now I have to resist the temptation to site jump during the day to keep up my learning and leave it until night and budget for what could become a most enjoyable but quite expensive hobby.

I really liked the idea of the critique session – it was brilliant to see how differently or not we each viewed the same landscapes and what magical shots people were able to capture by doing something different to the next person. I think by putting up a shot you know needs some work plus a shot you are happy with that makes it an easier sell to people who are more self conscious perhaps?

Lastly, Mark you were an awesome instructor, laid back, helpful, "non techie" humble and a damn nice guy. I thought you and Matt complemented each other well and there was genuine concern for our well being at all times even if we were asked to "stop dawdling and hurry back to the bus" like naughty school children. In some ways it was a bizarre role reversal with the youngster instructing participants all of whom were older than you, yet you carried it off in such a professional and poised manner that we all felt important, definitely not stupid or slow, valued and also as part of a group of eight an individual – I think that is a skill that many people double your age struggle with so congratulations on your approach!! "

Tour Testimonials

"Hi Mark, I just wanted to thank you for such a wonderful experience in Cairns. I now finally have the confidence to move off the dreaded 'Auto' mode and use my camera to it's potential.

I have taken a couple of photography courses in the past, but the way you explained things, it finally sunk in!

I have come away with some fantastic shots to show my family and friends, especially from the Green Island shoot. That chopper flight was one of the most exhilarating things I have ever done! I am still buzzing from it!"

- Sarah Olliffe, NSW

"Hey guys, thank you very much for the Cairns workshop, it was great and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. There was a great bunch of people and Mark and Matt were great, so relaxed and friendly. They just made everything so easy.

Mossman Gorge and the waterfalls were my favourite locations, but Palm Cove was really nice too. Great, informative technical sessions and Mark makes it all very easy for everyone to understand no matter what level your photography is at. The 1 on 1 tuition is also awesome, Mark was absolutely fantastic. He's very patient and can sometimes share just simple things that make a huge difference. I wish I could afford to book Mark for the whole 3 days of the workshop for just 1 on 1 tuition. I would love to take him with me everywhere I go when I take my shots. He just has this knack of looking at something a bit differently to you which means that a shot you think you composed really well ends up looking awesome instead.

Thanks Mark, you were brilliant!!!"

- Andrea Green, WA

"Hi Mark, just a quick note to say thank you for 3 great days of inspirational learning during the "Taste Of The Tropics'. Your method, style and passion in how you pass on your techniques and criticism makes for perhaps the most beneficial learning environment I have ever been a part of.

Learning different style and views from the rest of the group has made me look at how I compose my photos differently while your techniques make them just that little bit more striking.

See you on the next workshop!"
