Details:

Every now and then I capture something that is truly special, a particular location or moment in time that shows a completely unique perspective on nature as we know it.

When i visited Hancock Gorge for the first time, I knew immediately that this was one of those locations. I was taken aback by the sheer beauty of this place. Since the beginning of time, cool water from deep below the earth has flowed through this region carving out a remarkable canyon with amazing red rock walls. Now, water continues to flow through the gorge creating stunning cascades and waterfalls. This amazing waterfall drops sharply into the pool below with a bizarre spiral like twist.

I began my descent into Hancock Gorge in complete darkness not realising how much water was flowing through the canyon. After climbing down the gorge wall and hitting the canyon floor, twilight had arrived and I could see what I had gotten myself into. It had just been one of the wettest wet seasons on record and Cyclone Lua had passed through the region only 2 days before. There was loads of water flowing through the gorge. Luckily I had dressed appropriately and started to make my way further down into the gorge, climbing along steep cliff edges, slipping and sliding my way down through narrow fast-flowing cascades and wading through chest deep waterholes with 20kg of camera gear held high above my head.

45 minutes after starting my descent I arrived at the top of this incredible waterfall and my jaw dropped. I took a moment to take it all in but then realised it was getting light quickly, I had to move fast if I wanted to nail the best light of the day. I could instantly see a beautiful vertical photograph and set up my medium format film camera with my tripod in the perfect (but very dangerous) position, one wrong move and the front tripod leg would have slipped taking my expensive film camera over the edge and deep into the pool below. As the sun hit the horizon the red walls of the gorge began to glow and I captured this magnificent photograph with an exposure of well over 10 minutes. Confident that I had captured Hancock Gorge at it's absolute finest, I packed my gear away and retreated back to the safety of the world above.

This is now one of my personal favourite prints in my collection.
